Try telnet

On the FSRM run telnet on port 25 to see if you get the SMTP greeting fom Domino.

Also, are you trying to connect to the IP address or are you using the DNS name? I've seen the same thing before on SQL boxes but if you change the SMTP server to another then change it back it works again.
